Shigella sonnei in Cape Verde
As of 5 February 2026, a total of 112 confirmed Shigella sonnei cases were reported in travellers from England, Scotland and Wales who have visited to Cape Verde since 1 October 2025. Most of these travellers visited Santa Maria and Boa Vista. Previously, a Shigella sonnei outbreak was reported in Cape Verde in 2022, with cases in travellers from European countries, including the UK. Shigella sonnei in Cape Verde
The UK Health Security Agency is currently investigating an increase in reports of Shigella sonnei infection in travellers. The majority of cases report travel to Cape Verde. An outbreak of Shigella sonnei was also reported in Cape Verde in 2022, with cases occurring in travellers from a number of European countries including the UK.
